I've found a lot of the eye candy to be too distracting. compiz-fusion (used to be Beryl until Beryl and compiz merged back after forking) is really nice, and it actually works under KDE 3--not well, but it works. KDE 4 attempts to remedy this situation by adding their own compositing system which works pretty well. It's buggy, but it does look rather promising.

There are some things I don't like about the KDE 4 desktop which I will post about later. All in all, I just don't like Gnome. It's too awkward; if I'm going to go minimalistic, I'll use Openbox or Enlightenment!

I use GNOME personally... but there's a twist.

I've played around with Beryl and love the thing. The effects are rediculously appealing, without giving me all the clutter and what-not that came with Vista's "Widget" system. :Sigh:
It also gives me a lot more space to work with having a 3-dimensional desktop. I will sometimes get 3 or 4 different projects going at once.
